Fees and affordability

How to compare scholarships and fee discounts

A scholarship can improve affordability, but a large percentage on a banner does not explain its actual value to you. The important details are who qualifies, which costs are covered, when the benefit is received and what must happen for it to continue. This guide provides an original comparison framework. It does not confirm eligibility or availability for any particular scheme; use the current official guidelines and award letter.

Identify the type of benefit

Separate a scholarship, a fee waiver, a reimbursement and a promotional discount. The label used in advertising may not explain how the benefit works. Record the awarding organisation, programme, eligible learner group and official document. A reimbursement received later creates a different cash requirement from an immediate reduction in the invoice. If the offer comes through an intermediary, verify it with the institution or scheme administrator. Do not assume that two benefits with similar names have the same conditions or protections.

Check eligibility line by line

Create a checklist from the official scheme rules covering academic criteria, course, study mode, institution, income conditions where relevant and required documents. Mark evidence you already have and items that need verification. Government scheme discovery resources such as myScheme can help you locate information, but the applicable scheme guidelines and application process remain essential. Do not assume that an award advertised for postgraduate study covers every programme or mode. If a condition is unclear, ask the administering organisation before relying on the benefit.

Calculate the amount you can actually use

Use a fictional example: Offer A reduces tuition of ₹1,00,000 by 20%, giving a ₹20,000 benefit. Offer B promises 30% but caps the award at ₹15,000, so its usable value is ₹15,000. Neither percentage tells you whether examination, registration or accommodation charges are covered. Label examples clearly and calculate from your actual documents. Also check whether the benefit applies once, every term or across the full course. A higher percentage can still produce a smaller total saving.

Read renewal and continuation conditions

Look for requirements involving marks, attendance, progression, conduct, document updates or continued eligibility. Ask whether one missed condition affects only the next payment or also earlier benefits. Record the renewal process and deadlines from the official source. If you need a certain academic result each year, build a budget scenario in which the award does not renew. This is not pessimism; it helps you decide whether the programme remains manageable if circumstances change. Keep conditions visible in the same sheet as the advertised amount.

Check timing, combination and refund treatment

Confirm when the scholarship is applied or paid, whether you must first pay the full fee and whether another award can be combined with it. Ask how withdrawal, deferral or a programme change affects the benefit. Do not assume that a fee discount increases a cash refund by the same amount. Keep the official response and award letter with your payment records. If the institution cannot explain the mechanism clearly, treat the saving as unresolved until the terms are documented.

Use a comparison table before accepting

Create columns for gross programme cost, eligible cost base, award amount, cap, renewal, payment timing, required documents and net confirmed cost. Show pending applications separately from awarded benefits. Add a source link and date for each condition. Compare the programme’s academic fit and support as well as affordability, because a scholarship should not force you into an unsuitable course. After acceptance, maintain a simple reminder calendar for renewal and document submission using the official dates that apply to your award.

Frequently asked questions

Can I count an application as confirmed funding?

No. Keep it in a separate scenario until the awarding organisation confirms the benefit and conditions. Budgeting with unconfirmed funding can create a payment gap.

Should I choose the largest discount?

Compare the actual net cost, coverage and renewal conditions alongside programme suitability. The largest advertised percentage may not produce the best overall option.
